Pinned and Stitched is part of the Belconnen Community Gallery’s Springboard Series, which supports the Australian National University’s (ANU) School of Art graduates by providing a selected few with a range of solo and group exhibitions to showcase some of the freshest and finest local talent. For the artists it’s a chance for their graduation work to be exhibited outside of the Art School environment and find a new public audience.

Pinned and Stitched will feature works by five 2019 graduates of the ANU School of Art & Design’s Textiles Department: Angela Coleman, Portia Lawson, Anna Roufogalis and Rosie Armstrong.

Rosie Armstrong uses the techniques of laser cutting and watercolour paints to create a narrative of insect decline. In this series of work, Anna Roufogalis looks into the functionality and beauty of the human body through the lens of textiles. Portia Lawson’s collection of scientific-like specimens explores the synergy of spontaneity and individuality, and order and uniformity in natural systems of growth through the medium of automated machine embroidery and hand beading. Angela Coleman’s work investigates our memories attached to and imbued in clothing. The ephemeral nature of both is conveyed through the fragile materiality.
